If you’ve been keeping up with my past articles, you’d know I’m quite an active computer user. I do everything on my computer. I travel the world, meet people, do work, explore other worlds… You know, typical computer stuff.
Anyway, being a computer user does take its toll on my body. I end up slouching in my seat, like I am right now, leaving me with what some call “nerd neck”, where your shoulders are slouched, and your back is slightly hunched forward, even when not at a desk.
Living for years on end like this, sitting at a desk just leaves your body fatigued. When you stand up, you feel the blood finally rush to your legs, and you feel the need to stretch... All for just sitting!
I hardly do any exercise during my work day. I just end up sitting in my seat until I grab a snack, or take a restroom break. And as I said, it’s taking its toll on me.
So I decided for 2023 to finally make a change. I decided that during my work day, I will only be sitting for half of the time I’m working. And also stand at least once an hour when I’m using my computer for entertainment purposes, such as for a movie, or video game.
So how do I achieve this? You can’t work while standing… Right? Well, wrong! Actually, with this subtle change to my work desk, I became capable of sitting and standing whenever I chose!
I introduce you to: The Sit / Stand Desk! A desk that can go up or down, with the push of a button. This is the one that I purchased. As you can see, it’s electric, with buttons that allow it to go up or down, with 1 click. It also has this beautiful wooden grain which I’m loving. I also like that I can save up to 4 presets, so I can quickly switch between sitting or standing, to the exact height that I prefer.
With this, I can finally work while standing! Now I can walk around my office while on a phone call, or to pace and think. I find myself being way more productive simply due to this subtle change in how I work. I’m thinking better. I’m achieving more. It’s a no-brainer!
If the one I purchased isn’t your style, no fret! There’s many designs, sizes, and options available. Click here to check them out. Below I’ll be going over some pointers of what to look out for when looking to buy one.
Pointers
You get what you pay for. For me, I found for myself the right balance between price and feature set with my desk purchase. The size, the button options, its speed to go up and down, and the overall build quality. I like it.
Don’t go mechanical! I get it, they’re much cheaper. But let’s be honest with ourselves here. Do you really see yourself spinning that handle every time you want to sit or stand? I didn’t think so. The point here is to make the ability to switch from sitting to standing seamless. If you’re going to add more work to this, most of us will end up not using the feature at all. Right? Right.
Read Amazon reviews, and watch some on YouTube as well. This is crucial. You don’t want to be buying something that has a 2 star review, or where a high rate of people are complaining about the same specific problem from their desk. Make sure the one you’re buying has great reviews that talk about its build quality, ease of setup, and anything else you’re looking for out of your desk purchase.
Be mindful of your cabling! If you have cables that just barely reach your PC currently, you might have to buy new, longer cables. For instance your HDMI to your monitor, or mouse and keyboard USB ports, stuff like that. Make sure all of your cables have more than enough slack of 5 feet or so to ensure that there won’t be any issues when you switch to a standing position.
You have to build it. But, it’s only a few more steps from a standard desk, so this shouldn’t be a problem. But they don’t arrive assembled, so keep that in mind, and prepare your area to remove your old desk and leave space to build the new one.
Enjoy! Yes, this is the main part of this change! You’ll be enjoying your time better at your desk, feeling healthier overall, being on your feet more, feeling FREE! Wanna do a pushup? No problem! Wanna pace the room, to think better? Go ahead! Your mind and body will be thanking you tenfold!
Feel free to reach out and ask me any questions you have about a sit / stand desk! I’ve been using mine for a couple of months now, and if you’re concerned about anything, I’m here to help!
What’s being Watched / Played / Read / Heard
Watched: I watched the original Avatar movie. Haven’t had a chance to get to a theater to watch the latest one. But I thoroughly enjoyed the first one! I highly recommend you watch it if you haven’t, and you’d probably want to check the new one out in theaters too if you get a chance.
With Avatar on the brain, I decided to also get into Avatar: The Last Airbender. Totally different IP, I know. Regardless however, this is an absolutely incredible, Anime inspired show by Nickelodeon. Great art, music, story, everything. It’s great. I’m currently in the middle of Season 2, and with the rate at which I’m binging it, I’d probably be finished with the whole series by the end of the week! 😅
Played: I’m playing a lot of Propnight! If you don’t know what Propnight is, it’s a game that is inspired by the game mode Prop Hunt, and also by Dead by Daylight. So you are pretty much playing Dead by Daylight; trying to fix generators with your 3 other team mates, trying to evade the Killer, who’s job is to catch you and put you in a chair of death, until you finally can fix enough generators to unlock the exit and escape. Now, Propnight is the same, but you also get to become any object in the map! And you can move around as the prop too! There’s nothing like the satisfaction of a Killer swinging at everything trying to find you, while you’re just casually 2 feet away as a soda can watching. 🤣
With a great cast of characters and killers, and great maps too, I highly recommend you give this game a try if it sounds up your alley.
Read: I’m in the middle of the book Dune, by Frank Herbert. Fantasy isn’t my favorite genre of reading, but so far I’m liking it, but I’m still only in the beginning of the book, sort of. I’m about 150 pages in, and the book is about 900 pages long, so, go figure. But as I said, it’s so far a decent read.
Heard: I’m loving Lindsay Stirling’s music! As you know from my previous articles, I love me some folk music, as well as EDM, and for me, Lindsay walks that fine line between both! She can do incredible things with her violin. Don’t believe me? Hear for yourself!
